How to Make a Better You – What do you value?

Do you never feel like you never have enough time to do the things you want to do in life? Do you ever feel like the important things seem to always get put off and never seem to come to pass?

Why is that?

Usually what gets most of attention during the day is what we value. But is that true?

For many of us work takes up a lot of our day and we value that because we get a reward of a pay check. You also may value your job because you get to use your gifts, skills, and talents.

What about social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc)? Do you spend a lot of time looking and responding on those? What about watching TV or looking on your phone?

I would like you to take a few minutes and right down your top five priorities in your life. For example, mine are: spending time with God, spending time with my family, spending time with friends, exercising, and writing this blog.

The next thing I want you to do is look at your schedule and see if any or all of these are planned in each day. You’ll be surprised that little or none may be in your schedule and the things you value the most aren’t even in your day.

What can you do about this? I call them non-negotiables. In other words, if I have scheduled time to read the bible, listen to worship songs, and pray from 7:30 – 8:30 am every morning. No matter what may come up like having to bake cookies for a charity or someone asks me to do a favor for them. That time I have scheduled for God and it is non-negotiable.

What we value is what we put the most time into. However, the question is: are we putting time into the things we truly value or are we putting time into other things that aren’t really important in our life?

I mention about spending time with God because most of us have good intentions to spend that time but the day gets away from us. God wants our first thoughts to be about Him. He is our Heavenly Father, Our Comforter, Our Guider, Our Savior, Our Master, and so on. Shouldn’t we give Him the first part of our day? Should we spend time with Him throughout the day?

The bible says: Matthew 6:33 So above all, constantly chase after the realm of God’s kingdom and the righteousness that proceeds from him. Then all these less important things will be given to you abundantly. (TPT – The Passion Translation)

Mark 12:30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. (NIV)

Without God we can do nothing; shouldn’t He be the most important part of our life?

Think about John 15:5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. (NIV)

Isn’t it time for you to make what you value a priority in your life. It starts with making the necessary changes in your schedule to set those non-negotiables. I know you can do it.

Think about this song “I Surrender” and how you can apply it to your life.

To make a better you, re-evaluate what you value in life …is it things or is it God?… and make Him the essential part of your life.
