How to Make a Better You – Self- Care is Not Selfish; It’s What Allows You to Give More Generously
by Nina Sabin - Healthy Tip

If you are like me, it seems like everything in our lives keep us so busy that we forget to take care of ourselves.
We all have a to-do list and the things on that to-do list tend to have priority over our self-care. I even convinced myself that doing my business as a health and life coach was doing for myself. Which is somewhat true, but it wasn’t self-care.
How many of you leave the house to go to work, run errands, and care for the family early in the morning by just throwing on clothes and off you go. We usually grab that cup of coffee, a piece of toast, or muffin as we run out of the house.
You feel pressure all the time to get things done, and you don’t feel like there is enough time in the day to get it all done. So you say to yourself – how do I have time for self-care?
It doesn’t matter if you are a working, stay-at-home mom, or in an executive position, male or female, we all can feel stress. The truth is we put that pressure on ourselves. We do have time for self-care and to slow down. It is our choice to make that time.
Without self-care, we really can’t be our best. Our health suffers, because we aren’t eating at optimal times, the optimal food, or ensuring the optimal duration of a meal. Our digestion suffers which in turn affects us physically. We may get pain, put on weight, develop diabetes, heart disease, etc. Not eating properly also affects our mood, emotions, and energy. We need that energy to make it through all the things we plan to do for the day.
Self-care also involves exercise. Movement is so important for us in a day. Our body is designed to get exercise. Exercise helps those serotonin levels in our brain that provides those good and happy feelings. If we just sit all day long doing things at work or home, you aren’t giving your body the movement it needs to function.
Another thing to consider with self-care, is the amount of sleep you are getting. The average person needs about 7 – 9 hours of sleep. I know for me I find this difficult to get in. I tend to wake up early and go to sleep late. The saying burning the candle at both ends has been happening in my life for years. Getting enough sleep helps improve your mood, give you more energy, and make you feel good throughout the day which actually helps you accomplish more things.
One of the tools I teach you as a health and life coach is how to set up a power hour before bed. This helps prepare you for the pleasant sleep that your body desires.
Lastly, but definitively not least, is taking time for yourself to relax. Relaxation for yourself each day is important for your body to restore itself. If you are always on the go, running from place to place you don’t give your body time to regenerate. Your body is designed to need time to be still. During this time your body has time to slow down and repair itself. If you want to truly be healthy, this is very important. It also provides time to feel at peace. We all need that peaceful feeling throughout the day. Psalm 131:2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul…
So how do you make your self-care a priority?
The first thing to do is a make a list of the top five things you consider priority in your life. For me that is spending time with God, caring for myself, caring for my family, caring for friends, and being successful at my job. However, in the past, everything seemed to take me from my top two priorities of caring for myself and spending time with God.
Through the experience of being a health and life coach, I have learned how to have my priorities right in my life. That started with making the list above and becoming curious as to how those priorities show up in my everyday life. I had to learn to say yes to the things that are really important to me and the other things would have to be set aside for another day or not at all.
