Happy 2022! I hope you started your New Year with plans to make better lifestyle choices for yourself.
We all come up with three to ten New Year’s Resolutions and by February we already back into our old patterns?
The question is why?
We fall back because it is what we already know and our brain thinks it is easier than making changes.
We have what life coaches call a 'critter brain'. Our critter brain is afraid of making changes because it is the unknown – even though we know the changes might be good for us.
I titled today’s blog 'I Get To'. Why did I choose that title? Well, it goes perfectly with starting the new year right with uplifting thoughts and positive self-talk.
Too often we tell ourselves ‘I have to’ make these changes or I ‘should’ make these changes. Both of those word choices have a negative connotation and usually bring us down instead of lifting us up.
However, if we change our words to ‘I get to’ make these changes then our whole mindset is different. It is a more positive way of looking at the situation.
Look at the New Years Resolutions you made like this:
I get to eat healthy to feel better about myself and that will lead to losing weight which in turn will help me feel good about myself.
I get to exercise and become more active which will lead to a healthier me.
I get to read more which will lead to a feeling of relaxation and enjoyment.
I get to spend time with family which will better our relationships.
I get to spend more time with God which will grow my relationship with Him and my spiritual journey.
In the past you used to say ‘I should or I have to’. See how much better it feels to say ‘I get to’.
God doesn’t want us to be frustrated, struggle, or have a hard time in life. That is our choice.
Here is a verse to remind you of this. Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
