How often are you caught up in your own problems? Your mind is on things and you can’t focus on anything else? How do you get out of being self-involved? You help others!
Most of us live very busy life-styles and can’t seem to find the time to help others. The truth is we can find the time if we want to. How many hours do you spend watching tv? Instead of watching tv, devote the extra time to helping others.
How does helping others help yourself? When you help others it encourages self-esteem and self-worth. Something inside you gives you a boost and you feel good about yourself. In the meantime, the other person is getting the help they need. It is a win-win.
In the article Volunteering and its Surprising Benefits you learn that helping others helps you to reduce stress, find friends, reach out to the community, learn new skills, and even advance your career. Giving to others can also help protect your mental and physical health.
God also says Philippians 2:4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. This is great advice.
So what are you waiting for? Set aside at least one day a week to volunteer. A great resource to find out where you can help the most is United Way. They have many organizations that they assist and always need volunteers.
You can even help a friend or a neighbor...make a meal, clean out their garage with them, buy groceries, babysit, etc. You will see not only a difference in their lives but in your life too.
