How to Make a Better You – Changing Your Habits

By Nina Sabin - Healthy Tip

How many of us want to make a change, but it never seems to happen? We start out the New Year with all these great goals and resolutions, but by the middle of January, we are back in our old routines and those changes we were hoping for fall by the way side.

As humans, part of our design is to establish habits. According to Health Coach Institute (HCI), habits are little rituals you do every day. Some habits are health promoting while others are health destroying. So often it is the health destroying habits that we continue to do. Why is that the case? Because it is what we know and are comfortable with even though we know they are unhealthy for us.

For example, we know that eating a pint of ice cream late at night is bad for us physically; however, it tends to momentarily hit the spot emotionally. We know spending above our means is going to hurt us financially, but buying those shoes or fishing pole at the time made us feel better (or so we think). We know negative self-defeating thoughts make our life miserable and can lead to depression and anxiety, but we don’t know how to avoid them.

The question is: how do we change these unhealthy patterns of behavior (habits)? It has to be a lifestyle change. As you probably know, this is impossible to do on your own because you are missing the tools to be able to make the changes.

It first starts with finding the underlying reason for those destructive and self-defeating habits. By yourself, this is extremely hard to do. However, with guidance, follow-up, and tools to make the changes, you will see lasting results in all areas of your life.

Our unhealthy habits do not only happen in one area of life. It happens across the board in the areas of: health, money, relationships, career, and spirituality. We all have three basic human needs – LOVE, SAFETY, and BELONGING. If we feel like one or all of these needs are not being met, we tend to be lost and look for anything that will help those lost feelings, even if what we find is not good for us.

Lifestyle change is the future of healthcare. According to HCI, most chronic illness that affect 160 million Americans and account for 78% of our healthcare costs are caused by lifestyle and environmental factors. “Namely our diet, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and chronic stress.”

Healthy living is the best revenge to avoid illnesses and improve your health. There are four simple lifestyle behaviors: not smoking, exercising, keeping a healthy diet, and maintaining a healthy weight. I know what you are thinking to yourself: “I have tried doing all these things, but it never works.” That is because up to now you didn’t have the support, tools, and guidance to be successful and see permanent and lasting results.

Partnering with a health/life coach is the way to make lasting changes. I am earning a health/life coach certification. I am becoming a Master of Habit Change. Through the habit change coaching method, I will be able to help provide, the tools, support, and guidance for you to no longer do those destroying health habits, and replace them with healthy promoting health habits.

How often do you go to the doctors, they give you a list of things to do to improve your health, and you leave the doctor’s office feeling overwhelmed. You usually either put the list aside and plan to start it later. Then, forget about it and continue the status quo for your life which wasn’t working and the reason you went to the doctor in the first place. Well, you don’t have to figure out the list on your own. Health/live coaches help people to develop their full potential. By guidance, tools, and teaching strategies, coaches are there to help you succeed.

Through a 90-Day program, once-a-week 50-minute session, you will learn your underlying reason for those destroying habits, tools on how to replace them with healthy habits, and change your lifestyle to be healthy in all areas of your life.

The good news that if your schedule is pretty crazy, we don’t have to meet in person. Technology makes it possible to talk over video chat which is truly the next best thing to meeting in person. There are many forms of video chat options: Facebook Messenger, FaceTime, WhatsApp, Skype, Zoom, and many others. My favorite is Facebook Messenger, as it seems to be the best reception anywhere in the world. All you need is internet access and you are set.
